This single origin Silk Chile is botanically the same as the Aleppo chile but is grown in Turkey. True Aleppo Chiles are rarely exported now due to the ongoing conflict in Syria.
Silk Chile flakes, also known as Marash or maras chile, have a medium heat, slow build, and fruity flavor. They are preserved with a little salt and sunflower seed oil to maintain their color and flavor. Silk Chiles are used in a number of Middle Eastern dishes, such as hummus, baba ganoush, kebabs, and braised vegetables. They combine well with oregano, paprika, cumin, and garlic. Switch out your standby crushed red pepper for these chiles for a deeper, complex flavor.
Silk Chile is also a single origin spice, so all the chile flakes come from one farm run by the Bey brothers. Single origin spices help farmers earn a better living since importers directly source from the farmer, rather than paying a third middle man.
