Actual licorice has a somewhat different flavor than the sweet and syrupy black ropes of licorice candy. The real thing is more like anise or fennel. Licorice is believed to help a sore throat or cough and is often cut and steeped for tea. Use in baking or desserts to give a slight spice to your fruit pies or jams. Use the whole root as a skewer for a kabob. People even use the root as a natural toothbrush.

Licorice should be avoided by anyone pregnant or anyone who has high blood pressure, low blood potassium, or kidney, liver or heart problems.
