Also called cumaru or kumaru, tonka beans are the seeds of the fruit of a tropical flowering tree from the Fabaceae family. Tonka beads contain coumarin which is banned as a food additive in the United States. Instead, it is often used for its vanilla, cherry, spiced aroma that is reminiscent of incense in topical applications, potpourri, and perfumes.
